Digital Democracy

We worked to safeguard and advance critical democratic processes in Sri Lanka ahead of the 2020 elections. The project focused on strengthening public awareness around the dangers of disinformation and hate speech on social media, while also facilitating multi-stakeholder initiatives aimed at protecting human rights and supporting healthier online democratic discourse. DRI increased the transparency and integrity of the electoral campaign by providing clear, accessible information on the electoral framework and monitoring online campaign activities. At the same time, DRI contributed to strengthening devolved governance by building the capacity of selected Provincial Councils and supporting their engagement with citizens.
Through these efforts, DRI enhanced awareness of misinformation, media bias, and the importance of social media literacy among citizens, while bringing together government actors, civil society, experts, and other stakeholders to find collaborative solutions to the governance and social cohesion challenges posed by the misuse of social media. Furthermore, DRI provided technical support to the electoral reform process and worked to reinforce the Provincial Council system by building the capacities of key stakeholders and increasing public understanding and engagement.
