About the course

Our Social Media Monitoring Course offers four modules designed to equip individuals and organisations with the necessary theoretical basics, skills, and insights to monitor social media networks, while supporting with their own projects during office hours. It is designed for:

The course includes four Modules and office hours, where learners can ask questions related to course material and receive feedback on their SMM projects. The course is designed to accommodate 10-15 learners in an online environment. Our participants will not only learn how to collect, classify, and analyse data in a qualitative manner but also discover innovative tools and techniques to enhance their analytical capabilities.

Course content

Over four Modules, the content will cover the impact of social media and its analysis, differentiating between fact-checking and social media monitoring, identifying various forms of manipulation. It will delve into ethical considerations, research phases, and methodologies, exploring both qualitative approaches in detail.

Participants will learn to identify successful research elements, overcome challenges in data collection, analyse online violence and information manipulation, and develop skills in creating code books and conducting qualitative analysis using tools to follow, analyse, and report on what’s happening with public content on social media. You will learn:

Inês Narciso

Inês is a social media monitoring and OSINT expert with extensive experience in combating disinformation and influence operations. She holds a Master's in Criminology from the University of Leicester and is pursuing a PhD in Sociology at ISCTE-IUL, where she also conducts research on disinformation and digital narratives at MediaLab. She has provided OSINT training to researchers and professionals worldwide, delivered courses on identifying and monitoring foreign information manipulation and influence (FIMI), and worked as a social listening expert for the Portuguese Prime Minister, overseeing daily monitoring of social media. Inês is a co-author of the Obsint Guidelines for ethical and rigorous digital investigations and teaches Digital Methods. She actively contributes to international initiatives, including the Code of Practice on Disinformation by the European Commission, FIMI-ISAC, and the Carnegie Endowment's Partnership for Countering Influence Operations.

Giovanna Maiola

Giovanna is a media analyst with extensive experience, working both as an associate researcher with the Osservatorio di Pavia (OdP) and as a freelance. Her expertise spans media analysis and monitoring, digital rights and social networks, media development in electoral contexts, as well as inclusion and civic and voter education. She has served as team coordinator, trainer, and media/social media analyst for a wide range of international institutions—including the European Union (EU), the OSCE/ODIHR, the United Nations (UN), and International IDEA—as well as civil society organizations such as IFES, IMS, IREX, and FPU. Her work focuses on issues related to democracy, freedom of expression, and media development. She has provided OSINT training to researchers and professionals worldwide, delivered courses on identifying and monitoring foreign information manipulation and influence (FIMI), and worked as a social listening expert for the Portuguese Prime Minister, overseeing daily monitoring of social media. Adeline Marquis

Adeline is a DRI trainer and an independent consultant with more than 14 years of experience with election observation. From 2019 on, she specialised in social media and media monitoring during electoral processes. In addition, she works on developing methodology and reinforcing organisations' capacities to monitor social media. She has also taken part in a study assessing the impact of deepfakes on the democratic process, conducted by Democracy Reporting International, and led trainings for CSOs and election practitioners on social media monitoring, data collection, and women in politics with DRI, EODS, and NDI. She has provided OSINT training to researchers and professionals worldwide, delivered courses on identifying and monitoring foreign information manipulation and influence (FIMI), and worked as a social listening expert for the Portuguese Prime Minister, overseeing daily monitoring of social media. Inês is a co-author of the Obsint Guidelines for ethical and rigorous digital investigations and teaches Digital Methods.
