What We Do

Our Focus Areas

To fulfil our vision of a world where democracies become more inclusive, participatory and effective, we focus on five key areas.

Public
Participation

Public Participation

We strengthen the capacity of dedicated partners, drive democratic innovation and protect civic space. In doing so, we cooperate closely with national and regional civil society organisations advancing the common good.

Additionally, we support reform- minded institutions and policymakers willing to preserve and expand the civic space, a prerequisite for democracy to thrive.

Rule of Law
and Justice

Rule of Law and Justice

We support the independence of courts and provide in-depth analysis and reporting on critical and seemingly technical developments in the rule of law. We also work with the media to foster greater public attention to these issues.

Additionally, this area aids in constitutional reform processes.

Elections

Elections

We strengthen the integrity of elections by supporting election observers who ensure greater transparency. Additionally, we promote the participation of young people to make elections more inclusive.

Our work in this area also involves monitoring online campaigns, assisting electoral processes and advocating for electoral reforms.

Digital
Democracy

Digital Democracy

In the digital space, we foster open debate and combat severe political polarisation. Our goal is to ensure that the transformations of the online information space remain compatible with democratic values. We analyse and monitor online discourse, particularly around elections, and assess the impact of AI on electoral processes, political debate, and information.

Additionally, we train digital researchers, build the capacity of partner organisations, conduct risk assessments, and engage policymakers and private actors to shape online policy and regulation.

Local Governance

Local Governance

Local governments, as the most tangible and visible part of public power, are a fundamental tier of democracy, responsible for delivering essential public services. We support civil society and government by sharing best practices in decentralisation reforms, fostering greater civil participation in local governance, and building the capacity of local actors.
